Wives World ~ Love is Not Optional

This day of love is a painful reminder for many.  For so many of the people I know, this day is one they just want to get over with quickly.  It’s like there is a giant arrow pointing down from the sky pointing to them.  The flashing neon light says, “Not loved, not loved, not loved.”

I propose to you today (pardon the pun) that you get your power back over this day.  You do this by not expecting love but by looking for ways that YOU can love.  Who can you show kindness, a.ka. as love, to today?  The check out person at Walmart?  The girl at work that hardly is ever noticed?  Is there a food kitchen you can drive by and give your Starbucks money to today?  There are so many hurting people.  There are ones YOU can reach out to and “make their day” today. Focusing on who you can love will make this the very best Valentines Day for you.

This really isn’t new news is it?  Loving well really isn’t an option.  It is a command from Jesus Himself.  Love afterall is about giving when you don’t feel like it.  “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.”  (John 15:13-14).  What is Jesus commanding here?  Lets skip ahead a few sentences. (I think God allows us this…skipping ahead…).  “This is my command:  Love each other.”  (John 15:17).

If only we could follow this mandate.  Loving back only if we are loved first, well that actually isn’t love.  That is called maniupulation so I can get what I need…love.  Expecting your mate to love you first never works.  You are commanded to love, it really isn’t a choice.

Find someone to give the heart of Christ today.  You will be blessed more than any worldy piece of paper called a valentine can give you.  You are not alone.  Others need love today and you may just be the only one who comes along who can give it to them.

I write this blog as a thank you to a bank teller who probably will never read this.  On one of my bleakest valentines days ever, her voice was the only message of hope I heard that day.  She took my deposit and sent it back with a wonderful message of hope and love.  “You have a special day today, Trudy.  You are loved even if you don’t feel like you are.”  Those words zipped me out of my hole and helped me through the day.

Love is not optional.  It is a command.

  1. So often I get caught up in the “what’s in it for me”. Thank you for reminding me that I am not the center, and by giving a little, I receive so much more.
